Variety Selection

  • Variety selection should first be based on winter hardiness and secondly on disease and insect resistance. (The best protection against diseases and insects is genetic resistance)

  • Estimate winter hardiness from winter survival ratings determined by standardized field tests. Winter Survival Index (WSI) scores (range from 1 (most winter hardy) to 6 (least winter hardy).

  • Alfalfa varieties are also rated for fall dormancy, a measure of fall re-growth. Fall dormancy (FD) ratings range from 1 (minimum fall regrowth) to 10 (maximum fall regrowth).
