Variety selection should first be based on winter hardiness and secondly on disease and insect resistance.
(The best protection against diseases and insects is genetic
resistance).
Estimate winter hardiness from winter survival ratings determined by standardized field tests. Winter Survival Index (WSI) scores (range from 1 (most winter hardy) to 6 (least winter hardy).
Alfalfa varieties are also rated for fall dormancy, a measure of fall re-growth. Fall dormancy (FD) ratings range from 1 (minimum fall regrowth) to 10 (maximum fall regrowth).
